My name is Erin Stadeli and I'm a DONA trained Birth Doula working towards certification. I'm a Christian mother of 3 children ranging from 1 1/2-13 living in Salem, Oregon. I have attended several births (besides my own) and look forward to becoming a certified birth doula through DONA (CD(DONA))! I am also a private Lactation Educator. I'm currently studying to become certified as a Christian Childbirth Educator.
Being a Christian, I am happy to serve people from all religions, ethnicities, sexual orientation, family status, etc. I do not discriminate on any of those basis' and look at being a doula as an opportunity to serve women.
Beginning in July I'm proud to announce that I will be offering Christian Childbirth Education (CCBE) classes! I view it as an alternative for Christian families desiring something different, that focus on the God as the true Lord of birth. This class covers all necessary fundamentals, but also Biblical principles that can be applied to your pregnancy and birth. I hope you consider it as an alternative, as the Holy Spirit leads, as a way to learn about pregnancy and birth while at the same time bringing glory to the Lord. This class isn't only designed for Christians. I believe families and couples from a variety of religious backgrounds will benefit from these classes. I will offer a sliding scale and scholarships, as I do for all my services, so that all families that desire to take the course will be able to without having to worry about affording the full cost. I feel this is a ministry and passion, and no one will be turned away based on their ability to pay. I deeply desire to serve others.
What is a Doula?
The word "Doula" comes from Greek and means 'a woman who serves'. I am trained to be a birth companion, however, I do not preform any clinical tasks. I provide physical and emotional support as well as information to women and their partners during labor and birth.
I can offer advice and help in providing comfort measures including positioning, movement, massage, breathing and other relaxation techniques you may find helpful. I will meet with you anywhere from 1-3 times before your labor to assess and discuss what type of birth you'd like, what procedures you do or do not want done, what role you'd like me to play, the role your partner will play, and many other things. After your delivery we will meet 1-2 more times to discuss your birth experience and I'll check in to see how breastfeeding is going and answer any questions you may have. At this time I'll also give you a keepsake essay about your birth.
Once you begin labor you will contact me and we will decide together when you would like me to arrive. If I cannot make it for some reason, you will meet my back-up prior to the birth. I like to know as soon as you think you're in labor so I can make arrangements and meet you (at home or at the hospital) within an hour (slightly more if you live further away) of you requesting me. Once I arrive I will stay with you throughout your labor and for about an hour after baby is born to make sure you're somewhat settled and I will help initiate breastfeeding if it is your desire to do so.
I will then leave you and your family to further get to know one another. I can take pictures if asked, after the birth. I can also stay with mom (or baby) if a c-section or emergency transfer is necessary. These cases are rare, but something that should be discussed openly should the need arise.
Why Should I Have a Doula?
Statistics show that having a birth doula are: • 26% less likely to give birth by c-section • 41% less likely to give birth with a vacuum extractor or forceps • 28% less likely to use any analgesia or anesthesia • 33% less likely to be dissatisfied or to negatively rate their birth experience
(Findings of Hodnett's et al meta-analysis of 15 trials of continuous labor support from N. America, Europe, and Africa)
DONA
DONA stands for Doulas of North America and is an international organization that was founded in part by Penny Simkin, a pioneer in the modern doula movement. DONA believes that a doula should be available to every pregnant woman that wants one. Accordingly, I have no set price, but rather a sliding scale and I strive to serve women of all different social, economic, and cultural backgrounds. DONA has strict standards to become certified including required reading, attending a training, reading a position paper, writing a paper, completing lactation education, and attending at least 3 qualifying births.
